The Heart Behind Thrive at Home Care
Hello, and welcome. I’m Derek Brochu, founder of Thrive at Home Care. I’d like to share a little about myself, my family, and the experiences that inspired me to build a business centred on caring for others.
I’ve been married to my lovely wife, since 2013. Together, we’re raising our 11-year-old twins, who keep our lives busy and full of adventure. One loves football, while the other has a passion for horseback riding. Our family also includes Toby, our much-loved dog, whom we adopted from a shelter.
Outside of work and family life, I coach youth football and still enjoy playing hockey a few times a week. Coaching gives me the opportunity to help young people develop confidence, learn teamwork, and support one another. Those same values mean a great deal to me in both my personal life and my work.
My professional path has brought together two different but meaningful interests. I hold diplomas in Recreation and Leisure Services and Business Accounting, and I’ve spent the past 15 years running my accounting firm. Throughout that time, I’ve valued the relationships I’ve built and the trust people place in me when they need guidance and support.
As I’ve become more involved in caring for my own family members, I’ve felt drawn back to my roots in helping people enjoy a better quality of life. That experience has also deepened my understanding of the responsibilities so many families carry, quietly each day.
Caring for someone you love can be deeply meaningful. It can also be tiring, time-consuming, and emotionally difficult. There are appointments to arrange, errands to run, meals to prepare, and countless small things to remember. Often, those responsibilities come alongside raising children, working full-time, and trying to keep up with your own household.
Many of us are part of the “sandwich generation,” supporting our children while also caring for aging parents or other loved ones. We want to be there for everyone, but sometimes we reach the end of the day with very little left for ourselves.
I want families to know that needing help is nothing to feel guilty about. You can love someone deeply and still need rest, time with your children, or an afternoon to take care of your own needs.
That understanding is at the heart of Thrive at Home Care.
I’m building Thrive to provide compassionate, dependable, and personalized support for adults of all ages, including seniors, so they can continue to feel comfortable, respected, and connected at home. Just as importantly, I want family caregivers to feel supported, too.
Sometimes that support is companionship or a helping hand with everyday tasks. Other times, it gives a family member the chance to attend an appointment, enjoy an evening out, or simply catch their breath.
My hope is that sharing those responsibilities also makes more room for the relationships that matter most. A visit can include time to sit over a cup of tea, share a story, or laugh together, with fewer worries about everything that still needs to be done.
To me, helping a family thrive means caring about everyone involved: the person receiving support and the people who love them. It means listening, respecting individual routines and preferences, and understanding that every family’s needs are different.
From my family to yours, thank you for taking the time to get to know me and the heart behind Thrive at Home Care. If you or someone you love could use a helping hand, I welcome the opportunity to connect.
You don’t have to do it alone.
